A Great Woman

My granny is a great woman.
My granny can paint the sky with the certainty of her joy.
My granny doesn’t frown. My granny sees the world through the hands of God and she laughs,
“What do I have to frown about? I have every reason to smile.”
My granny is a giver. My granny gives and gives until she can’t give anymore and even then she finds a way.
My granny is strong. My granny can carry an entire lineage on her back, with her cane in her right hand.
My granny has hair. My granny has streams of a white ocean flowing from her head.

My granny fell. My granny fell in her bathroom because she hadn’t taken her cane along.
My granny receives. My granny receives from the family she carries on her back and also from her doctor.
My granny is weak. My granny is frail and easily breakable, contained with an “Easy There” sign on her chest.
My granny is bald. My granny lost her white ocean in the span of a month.
My granny has cancer. My granny has stage 4 lymphoma cancer.
My granny doesn’t frown. My granny sees the world through the hands of God and she giggles,
“What do I have to frown about? I still have every reason to smile.”
My granny can paint the sky with the consistency of her joy.
My granny was a great woman.

For my granny.
Eleven years later, I still have every reason to smile.
